WHAT IS KYPHOSIS?

When we look at the spine a slight lordosis in the neck slight kyphosis in the back area, normal hump, light depressions in the waist area. This normally observed cupping and hump has a certain limit. Generally, kyphosis in the dorsal area between 20 and 50-55 degrees in normal standing position is accepted within the normal limits. Kyphosis above 50-55 degrees is considered abnormal in standing position.

WHAT IS STRUCTURAL KYPHOSIS OR SCHEUERMANN'S KYPHOSIS?

Kyphosis over 50-55 degrees when the spine is viewed from the side and does NOT improves even if you correct your position straight. The cause of structural kyphosis is unknown it occurs due to the triangular shape of the spine bones from the normal square shape. Normally causes of kyphosis; spinal fractures, spinal infections and some musculoskeletal disorders unless it’s a structural kyphosis. The distinction between kyphosis due to structural or other causes is important with the humpback seen from the side of the poor posture. Kyphosis due to poor posture can be corrected when standing upright, but kyphosis due to other causes does NOT improve with upright standing.

WHAT IS TREATMENT OF BAD POSTURE?

Nowadays, it’s common in office workers and in children who constantly spend time at desk. It is necessary to adjust the sitting habits and get used to standing in a more upright position while sitting they improve with good posture training and physical treatment. It is essential to strengthen the back and waist muscles in physical treatment.

WHAT IS STRUCTURAL KYPHOSIS TREATMENT?

In mild to moderate kyphosis, corset treatment and physical therapy may prevent the progression of the disease and surgical margins. These applications do NOT correct kyphosis. However, in most patients, there is an increase in kyphosis despite similar to scoliosis surgery, platinum is placed in the spine in surgical treatment. The use of corset and physical treatment, and progresses to the extent that surgical treatment is required. Sometimes, in addition to the platinum to the spine, some levels of vertebrae are added to remove the wedge-shaped bone fragments to correct the hump.
